​​Rear Admiral James Hancock, MD, US Navy

​Dr. Jim Hancock is a native of Illiopolis, IL. He enlisted in the Navy in 1982, earned his Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1990 from the United States Naval Academy and his doctorate of medicine degree in 1995 from Uniform Services University of Health Sciences.

In 1998 Hancock made his first combat deployment with Marine Aircraft Group 31 to Kosovo, serving as the group surgeon. In 2002, as the officer in charge of Fleet Surgical Team Seven, he made multiple deployments in support of the Global War on Terrorism with Naval Special Warfare Command. His team developed and deployed the concept of operations for resuscitative surgery aboard small combatant ships engaged in distributed operations.

In the spring of 2008, Hancock deployed with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, to Afghanistan. Following his deployment to Afghanistan, Hancock joined chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen’s Gray Team in 2009. The Gray Team was tasked to evaluate and advise the chairman on all facets of traumatic brain injury treatment. Subsequently, he optimized battlefield treatment of traumatic brain injury during multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
