He enlisted in the Marine Corps on September 13, 1993, supporting the Global War on Terror and engaging in humanitarian missions over his 20-year career, which included serving in the President's Helicopter Squadron. After retiring in July 2014, Jose remained dedicated to community involvement, participating in local charities such as the US Armed Forces Museum and the United Way. Dwight Johnson was born in Fargo, ND, and raised in Richardson, TX. My early fascination with military affairs began with news clips of the Vietnam War and evolved as I played with toys like plastic Army men and GI Joe. This passion ultimately led me to join the Army in 1993, attracted by the promise of flight positions. Over 23 years, I served in multiple countries, including Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and I retired in 2016 due to medical issues. My commitment to service continued through involvement with Combat Marine Outdoors (CMO), where I met Rusty Hicks. Together, we focused on helping others, understanding the life-changing impact of CMO events. The tragic loss of my son Barrett to suicide intensified my dedication to supporting veterans and connecting them to resources for hope and healing. I strive to promote open communication among warriors to save lives and advocate for organizations like CMO.

Armando Huerta was born and raised in Waco, Texas, where I spent the first twenty-five years of my life. I subsequently moved to Topeka, Kansas, where I met and married my wife, Patricia. We have three children together.  I made the decision to join the Army, following in my father's footsteps, with the support of my wife. I and my family were well-suited to the Army lifestyle, and I participated in three combat deployments to Qatar/Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Our relocation to San Antonio was precipitated by my medical retirement from the military in 2017.  The transition to civilian life following military service was difficult, as it is for many veterans. Nevertheless, in 2019, I stumbled upon the CMO, where I commenced volunteering and subsequently assumed a position within the organization. I have since shared my outdoor experiences and fellowship with numerous veterans, and I am eager to continue this outreach endeavor for years to come.

ABOUT US

The Combat Marine Outdoors story began in 2005 after visiting combat wounded Marines and Sailors from the 1st Marine Division at Brooke Army Medical Center for several months. The Marines, Sailors and service members there needed an opportunity to get away from the hospital, in an environment of friendship, camaraderie, and fellowship with fellow Marines to accelerate their recovery from the traumatic injuries they sustained in combat.
